Mission to Macas, Ecuador
October 15-23 2016
This was my second year back in Macas, Ecuador. It took 3 flights to arrive in the city of Cuenca, and 5 more hours driving until we arrived in Macas
My friend Doctor Lenin Zea and Pastoral Social Caritas Ecuador organized the locations I serviced on this trip. Doctor Lenin Zea lent me an old dental unit to enable me to do dental restorations. I had a local dentist Dr. Luis Javier Lopez and a hair stylist Mr. Jovani Portilla, great people to work with. They are both from Macas.
We served 3 communities El Rosario, Sarrentsa and Sinai. These 3 places are located in different places in Macas.
El Rosario was the first community; great people, very friendly, lots of children. At this place we worked at the school. 96 people received dental care, including cleaning, restorations, and fluoride treatment. In El Rosario some 30 people received haircuts and 23 reading glasses. The children were so happy and very excited to have a haircut, they lined up for this service.
Sarrentsa was the second community, very far from Macas and a challenge to get there. We drove for 1 1/2 hours from Macas to arrive half way, and had to cross a bridge and carry the water, dental unit and all we needed to provide the service.
After we crossed the bridge, another truck was waiting to take us to the final destination, about 30 more minutes further. Sarrentsa is a very small community of about 70 families.
They gave us their community room to provide our service. A large room, very dark. Here, 45 people received dental care, some 44 haircuts and 29 reading glasses.
Our work in this place was very successful because the people have been living here some 35 years and have never received this kind of help. They were very pleased and happy about our services.
Sinai was the third community, about 45 minutes from Macas. We provided our services at a location which belongs to their church. 68 people received dental care, 30 received haircuts and 22 reading glasses. In all these places the children received toothbrushes, toothpaste, Beanie Babies, toy cars, sandals, Rosaries, Holy Cards, and Holy Medals. We all prayed for peace and to be able to return next year.
